Small Animal Assistant
Aims
To assist in the care of small animals in the miscellaneous unit ( mainly rabbits, guinea pigs, rodents, birds, wildlife and any other housed in this unit ) and assist with administration as directed.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Prepare and provide food and water for animals housed in the miscellaneous unit as instructed by a member of staff
- Clean, disinfect and maintain high standards of hygiene and cleanliness of accommodation units and general work areas
- Attend to the exercise, socialising and grooming of animals as necessary and as instructed
- Follow all health and safety rules and procedures and ensure that all accidents or incidents are reported immediately to the Manager/Deputy
- Work with staff members, other volunteers and trainees
- Carry out adoptions if and when appropriate training is given and only if authorised by the Manager/Deputy
- Assist in the handling of animals for the purpose of examination and treatment
- Assist in the up keep of animal records
Additional Notes
- All animals must remain within the unit unless instructed otherwise by a member of staff.
- The Shelter reserves the right to restrict volunteer access to the unit or parts of the unit for the purpose of preventing cross infection and the spread of disease.
- Volunteers must not handle wildlife unless authorised to do so and properly trained to do so.
- Volunteers must not handle or administer any medication unless authorised to do so by the Manager/Deputy.
