Viewing the Animals

  • Each animal pen will have a card with the animal's name and reference number. Each pen will have brief details about the animal such as its suitability with other animals and the recommended child age.
  • Certain animals may have a card stating "Not for Adoption" and the staff will not be able to discuss any details or potential adoption with you.

The Procedure

  • The first step in adopting an animal is to complete an adoption questionnaire. This will help us match the most suitable animal to your lifestyle.
  • Both your family and our animal will each have particular needs, depending on age, lifestyle and experience. Our aim is to ensure that every adoption is successful. Following a brief interview you will be directed towards suitable animals.
  • We will also need to see proof of ID (such as a driving licence or household bill) and also need to meet all members of your household.
  • If your chosen animal appears to be a good match, an Animal Care Assistant will then introduce you. We may refuse you for a specific reason. This is no reflection on you or your family but we have to follow the Society's re-homing guidelines.
  • We understand that our re-homing process and questions may lead to queues in busy periods so we ask you to please be patient!

Reserving an Animal

  • Once we are satisfied that all members of the family are happy with your chosen animal you will be asked to pay a deposit (non-refundable) to reserve it for you, while we carry out a home visit.
  • We encourage you to visit your new pet while it is on reserve and you are waiting for a home visit to take place.

The Home Visit

  • A volunteer Home Visitor will contact you to make arrangements for a visit to check your facilities and give you any further advice you may need.
  • Again, please be patient as this may take a few days to arrange our volunteers who are unpaid and do this work for us in their spare time.
  • The Home Visitor will contact us with a result and you will then be telephoned to arrange collection.
  • We request that this is done as soon as conveniently possible (i.e. 2 or 3 days) as we have other animals waiting to take its place!

Collecting your new companion animal

  • Collection of animals is by appointment only. Please do not attempt to collect without first making arrangements with the Shelter.
  • The microchip registration can take up to 4 weeks. An identity disc will be prepared, free of charge, for all cats and dogs. All cats must leave the shelter with a collar and in a secure carrier, and all dogs must leave with a collar and lead for their own safety.
  • The remainder of the adoption fees are due when you collect the animal
  • Finally, we retain the legal ownership of animals adopted from us. We reserve the right to check on their welfare for the rest of their lives. If we have any cause for concern relating to their welfare, or if the adoption conditions are contravened, we are then able to reclaim them.

After Adoption

  • If you encounter any health problems please contact your own vet immediately.
  • If you encounter any behavioural problems, please call us as we have a wealth of experience and may be able to advise you on the best way forward.
  • Finally, if for any reason you are no longer able to keep your pet, you should contact us to return it to the Shelter as soon as possible.
